Research Summary
Most people will know the story of the original story of Alice in Wonderland and also the 2010 adaptation of Alice in Wonderland, directed by Tim Burton. The 2010 movie follows the protagonist Alice, as she becomes distracted at a garden party by a white rabbit. Alice follows the white rabbit to end up falling down a hole in a tree and finds herself in a room, where she eats and drinks different things that change her size. She meets many characters along her journey including a dormouse, dodo bird, and The Cheshire Cat who brings her to The Mad Hatter. In the movie, The Mad Hatter is just what he sounds like: mad. It is obvious that he is suffering from some sort of mental illness. The Mad Hatter says random things throughout the movie and shows signs of ADHD or PTSD. In my adaptation of the 2010 Alice in Wonderland directed by Tim Burton, I will be exploring the concept of mental health associated with The Mad Hatter specifically. I want to uncover the hidden messages that Disney often tries to cover up such as mental illnesses through my adaptation.
