My Statement
For my project, I am going to be adapting Alice in Wonderland, directed by Tim Burton. I picked this movie to adapt because it has always been a favorite movie of mine and because I think that it would fit into the concept of monsters and misfits that we talk about in class. The movie focuses on the main character Alice, who follows a white rabbit into a magical world called wonderland and she encounters different people and creatures including the mad hatter, the Cheshire Cat, the red queen, and more. Since it is a Disney movie, it is not that scary or creepy because it was made for children, so I want to make it more creepy so that it goes better with the concept of monsters and Misfits. I want to adapt the movie into a few chapters of a story that focuses more on the mad hatter. The mad hatter is the character in the movie that helps Alice and is next to her in a lot of scenes. He seems “crazy” or strange because of his facial expressions and he screams out some things. The mad hater’s background and his past could be an interesting thing to explore with this movie and also the darkness that is skipped over by Disney. Mental health with the mad hatter is something that I can encorporate and how traumatic events can influence the rest of your life and how this can create monsters. In my writing I am going to try to explore different causes for the mad hatter’s actions and emotions. Another concept that I would like to write about is Sociology and physiology and how they connect to the mad hatter and the story in a whole. I could answer questions like, what time period is the 2010 movie set in, could we change it? I can talk about how the movie relates to the time period with mental heath or any current events at the time that could influence the making of the movie. When I am writing, I am going to be thinking about the visuals of the movie and see how I can use those visuals to create a new story that stays true to the basic idea of the movie, but also changing the feeling of comfort that Disney makes.
